As soon as the game started Berlin’s offensive play was strong and dominant. They won the game by 6 goals to 2. Danny Brière was the most valuable player of the match with 3 goals and 1 assist.
It was as Berlin’s coach Don Jackson had designed this game. His team dominated right from the beginning. As a result they opened the scoring with two quick goals. Although Florian Busch laid on the ice he maintained the puck possession somehow. Barry Tallackson picked it up and hammered the black slice right under the crossbar (04:08). 127 seconds later Danny Brière punished Sean Blanchard´s lack of discipline with a shot from short distance (06:15). “After the Friday night it was a good game” teammate Matt Foy grinned. “We were happy to score those two early goals. That´s the way we have to play: stick to our system, play defensively strong and score many goals”. Berlin tried even to augment the lead, but goalie Daniar Dshunussow started to make some really good saves. Wolfsburg fought back. At 18:03 they found a way to cut the lead in half. Adrian Grygiel one timed Sebastian Furchner´s cross the ice pass converting the two on one chance.
Danny Brière scored his second goal of the game at the start of the second period. And once more it was his Flyer teammate Claude Giroux who put him in action with a hard and well aimed cross the ice pass to the front of the goal of course (03:09). Later on the home team made it a one goal game again. At 09:44 Aleksander Polaczek hammered the puck from the high crease into Sebastian Elwing´s net. During the following minutes the game became really nervous and intense. Some players seemed to have “many private matters to resolve” so that the referees had to call out many penalties.
The Eisbären began the third period as same as they played the previous. Jamie Arniel used his free space during the one man advantage situation to punish Mat Dzieduszycki’s loss of discipline on the ice (01:00). “During the first 10 minutes we didn´t play really well” Wolfsburg’s Kai Hospelt voiced his disappointment on the game. “As soon as Berlin was two goals up it was even more difficult for us to come back into the game. After the 4 to 2 we gave up and didn´t fight anylonger. Brière and Giroux took the advantage of their big experience – they are awesome players”.
It got even worse for the home team. Frank Hördler augmented the lead with a beautiful wrister from the blue line to 5 goals to 2 (13:33). Unfortunately for Wolfsburg Berlin´s hunger wasn’t satisfied – especially one player didn`t give up searching the goal. Danny Brière scored his third goal one timing Julian Talbot´s pass at the high slot area (19:19). The “Canuck” is Mr. 100 per cent – three shots on goal – three goals.
Information on Brière/Giroux:
One scene describes excellently that Claude Giroux is really enjoying it being back on the ice. The Eisbären just augmented their lead to 4 goals to 2. Giroux hustled to get the possession of the puck in Berlin´s own defensive zone. He didn´t seem to have great respect for the three defensemen in front of him. He out played them magnificently. Unfortunately goalie Daniar Dshunussow made a legal poke check. But Giroux only grinned and tried it again few minutes later.
Danny Brière: “It is a good feeling to help the team in such a good way. Hockey is a team game. You can’t do anything alone. The players help each other. Everybody has roles. I try to find the wholes so that the other guys can put me in action. It is a great feeling to play with Giroux together. He has really good eyes and I try to take advantage of it”.
Claude Giroux: “Usually that is the way it happenes between us. I give him the puck and he puts it in. He is very good in scoring. When I see open ice I try to get the things going – unfortunately my back-to-back effort didn’t go in at the beginning of the third period”.
