I was raised in home with a Nonna and a Mama. Both Italian. As I grew older, I wanted their recipes. So I would seat myself down and measured everything they made. It was slow going and they fussed at me, but like this recipe, they said add a glass of sugar. What size? "Whatta you mean what size?" I am still looking for Nonna's bousalone ??? recipe. It was lemon coffee cake with yolks of eggs, lemon zest all beaten into a fluffy frosting that she would use a feather to spread over her cooked cake.
