I would like to grow my own tomatos and make my own gravey, any suggestions or ideas that would be beneficial ?

My grand parents came from Italy, my mom was born here in New Jersey. My grandparents did not teach my mom or her sisters to speak Italian, " We are in America, we speak English", therfore I cannot speak Italian. This is something I feel like I have missed out on.
